Tips to Beat the Freeze

With the recent extreme cold temperatures, we thought we’d share a few tips to help prevent pipes from bursting. Here are a few ways to keep your pipes warm and water running:

  1. Keep garage doors closed, especially if there are water lines in the garage.

  2. Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow arm air from your home to heat the pipes under your sink. This is especially important if your sinks are on an exterior wall.

  3. Let cold water drip from a faucet that is on an exterior wall. Just a small trickle will work. This may seem wasteful but it could save you the expense and headache of dealing with a burst pipe.

  4. Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature during the day and night. During extreme cold, it’s better to keep a steady temperature to keep your pipes warm and not put extra work on your furnace to maintain varying temperatures.

  5. If you plan to be away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home.

  6. For the long term, add insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in those areas.
